You Have 7 Seconds To Make A First Impression: Here's How To Succeed

It only takes 7 seconds to make a good or bad impression. The fact is that we judge people quickly and we form opinions about them almost instantly. What can we do about it?

You can do these 3 things to make sure you make a strong first impression with anyone you meet!

 

1. Emotional projection. 

A golden rule in communication is “whatever you feel, the other person feels”. If you are in a negative mood, people will perceive that and they will associate these negative emotions to you. It’s important to be aware of your emotional state when you talk to people. How can you change how you feel?

You can change what you put your attention on.

For example, you want to activate emotions of happiness and passion before talking to someone. You can close your eyes for a few seconds and you can remember a memory where you experienced intense passion and happiness. You’ll instantly activate these emotions in your body. You can then approach anyone and they’ll perceive your emotions of passion and happiness and they’ll associate them with you.

 

2. Confident body language.

How you hold yourself will impact your confidence level that will impact your first impression. If you want to feel low energy right now, you can close your chest, look down, have no facial expressions, and put your shoulders down. This recipe is how you can make an awful first impression.

Now, take the opposite. You adopt the Superman or Superwoman posture. You open your chest, you put your shoulders back, you imagine you are wearing a cape, you open your posture, you use facial expressions and large hand gestures. How do you feel? Confident? Good. Try that next time you meet someone and you need more confidence!

 

3. Ask interesting questions.

When meeting someone, you can ask the normal questions such as “What do you do? Where are you from? etc” but it’s also interesting to mix them with interesting questions that may trigger positive emotions in the other person’s body.

For example, you can ask “Have you been working on an exciting project lately” or “What are the things you love doing when you have free time?” or “Any vacations coming up?”.

You can ask questions about their interests, passions, vacations, interesting projects and so on.
